An evening sponsored by Alzaytoon Productions features a film and play, joined by filmmaker and actor Mohammad Bakri. A documentary Film, "Since You Left", was produced, directed and acted by Mohammad Bakri. In the film, Bakri plays a visit to the grave of the famous Palestinian writer, Emile Habibi, and briefs him on what happened in Palestine since he passed away in 1996. Arabic with English subtitles.
The Play, which is an adaptation based on Emile Habibi's novel, Almotashael, is also directed and performed by Mr. Bakri. This adaptation of Habibi's classic satire dramatizes the story of Saeed (an Arabic male name, meaning "happy.") Saeed, the hapless pessoptimist, symbolizes the fate of the Palestinian people who lost their land but not their identity and drive for self determination. In Arabic.

Susan Abulhawa, human rights activist, award winning writer and founder of Playgrounds for Palestine will be appearing at Barnes & Noble (Princeton) on Thursday, March 15 @ 7PM for a reading from her new novel, THE SCAR OF DAVID, and will gladly discuss her foundation's efforts to build playgrounds in occupied territory. The Scar of David is a work of historic fiction which reveals the untold brutal history of Israel's Occupation of a nation as also depicted by the recently released PALESTINE, Peace Not Apartheid by former USA President Jimmy Carter. Set in the lap of one of the 20th century's most intractable political conflicts. Though the course of this story, a Palestinian boy grows up as a Jewish Israeli, tangled in a truth he cannot reconcile, a would-be suicide bomber is given a name, a face, and life of a man pushed to grave limits, an Arab girl of pious and humble beginnings lives the "American Dream," and a nation of destitute refugees is forced to live under the general label of "terrorists."

Exhibition runs April 6– April 27, 2007. For viewing info/hours call the Brecht Forum at 212-242-4201.
Four teenage participants from the Picture Balata workshop are coming to the US the first two weeks of April 2007. Showing their work and speaking about their lives, the photographers will travel to New York City, Washington DC, Youngstown, Boston, Chicago and San Francisco. These young people, leaving the West Bank for the first time, will be able to educate Americans regarding the reality of the situation in Balata Refugee Camp and occupied Palestine. The tour will also give them the chance to see that people outside Palestine support their work and the Palestinian struggle for justice.
The tour also aims to raise funds to purchase cameras, computers and internet access so that after further training the workshop participants, nine in total, will be able to do everything from taking the picture, editing it on their own computer and then publishing it on a website for the entire world to see. This self-sustainable project will give these young people the opportunity to further pursue photography and other media as a form of resistance.
Picture Balata in New York is sponsored by Al-Awda NY. For more information, contact us at info (at) al-awdany.org or by phone at 718-228-8636.

THE PROGRAM
The Fifth Annual International Al- Awda Convention promises to be an amazing three-day event from speakers and workshops, film showings, to a Palestine Cultural Dinner Event. The opening will be held on the evening of Friday 25 May and include a moving event at which survivors of the Nakba, the great catastrophe, share their recollections of their first-hand experience in 1948.
On Saturday May 26, the convention will devote itself to political assessments, and to developing the ongoing work of organizing right to return campaigns such as refugee support, media work, student, art/culture, etc., in addition to our recruitment and outreach projects.
On Sunday May 27, the convention will arrive at its resolutions based on the concrete recommendations of the various workshops.
The Saturday evening Palestinian Cultural Dinner Event will include keynote addresses as well as music by world-renowned maestro Dr. Nabil Azzam, poetry readings and more. A Naji el-Ali exhibition will also be on display in commemoration of the 20th anniversary of his assassination. The cartoons for this exhibit were kindly provided by Khalid el-Ali, his son.
Among the confirmed convention speakers are:
We urge all Al- Awda members, groups and individuals who support our goals to join us in our landmark Fifth Annual International Convention. It is extremely important to show those trying to silence us that they will not succeed. The convention is a superlative forum for right to return activists to listen to expert presentations and to share their own thoughts on how they would like to see our collective efforts and campaigns develop for the implementation of Palestinian refugee rights. With your support, Al- Awda's Fifth International Convention, like its predecessors, will be one of the largest annual gatherings of Palestinian Arab activists and their supporters. Don't Wait!
